Fenny Castle Vineyard
Fenny Castle Vineyard is situated right on the edge of the Somerset Levels in the tiny village of Worth, close to Wells, England's smallest cathedral city. Owners James and Gill Cumming dreamt of planting a small vineyard on the steep slopes overlooking Glastonbury Tor when they arrived at the farm in 2005. Years passed and the idea was buried in the bustle of running a company, farming a flock of Suffolk sheep and bringing up a young family. Four years later James decided to take the plunge and enrolled for a Viticulture and Winemaking degree at Plumpton College in East Sussex and so began our journey into the wine industry.
We planted the first parcel of Bacchus vines in 2011 and the main vineyard of Ortega and Pinot Noir the following year. Our first wines are now on sale, a Pinot Noir Rosé from a small 2013 harvest and a wonderful rich Ortega from 2014. The first Sparkling Rosé is resting 'on the lees' and we hope to disgorge the first batch by the end of the year.
Accommodation:
Our vineyard cottage is a cosy converted cow stall with an open plan living room and kitchen, a large inglenook fireplace and wood burner, perfect for those frosty winter nights. The bedroom has a comfortable double bed and a small single bed suitable for a child.
Tours and Tastings:
Our vineyard tours cost £20 per person and are a fun way to learn about how we grow grapes and make them into award-winning wine. You will walk through our vineyards and see the different varieties and training systems. In the winery we will talk you through the winemaking process and you will have the opportunity to taste our wines and ciders. At the end of the tour you will of course be able to buy our wines by the glass, bottle or case from our cellar door shop.
